Dear Birdsong Researcher:  Welcome to birdsong-l@mymaillists.usc.edu, the Listserv for songbird researchers

This is a mailing list designated for communication between researchers interested in vocal learning and behavior in songbirds.  Please feel free to forward this message to other songbird researchers, including graduate students and postdocs in your lab (see below on how to subscribe).

Some brief guidelines are as follows:

  1. I  (Sarah Bottjer) maintain the Listserv, and I depend on the discretion of users to act responsibly.  Inappropriate use of the list will cause me to block you from using it.
  2. To send a message to the List, use the listname itself (birdsong-l@mymaillists.usc.edu).  Hitting Reply to a Listserv message will send your reply only to the sender, so it you want your reply to go back to the whole list, be sure to copy the Listserv address (or use Reply All).
  3. To subscribe yourself, send an e-mail to sympa@mymaillists.usc.edu from the address you want to subscribe to the list with the following command in the subject line (plain text only):     subscribe birdsong-l First Name Name      (leave the message body blank)  (see summary below)

for example:  subscribe birdsong-l Jane Doe

I reserve the right to remove any addresses that are rejected or that produce an error response more than two times in a row.  Cheers, Sarah

These instructions are also posted to the Songbird Wiki at http://songbirdscience.com/people

n.b. If necessary send an email to Sarah Bottjer telling me that you are unable to subscribe to the list (and I will subscribe you if appropriate).

Summary of HOW TO SUBSCRIBE:

  • Choose the address with which you want to subscribe to the list.  You can only send messages to the list from this address.
  • Send a message to sympa@mymaillists.usc.edu from the address you want to subscribe to the list.    [sympa is a mailing list management robot.]
  • In the subject line of your message, type: subscribe nameofthelist Firstname Name
(replace 'nameofthelist' by the name of the list you want to subscribe to and indicate your own first name and name).
  • Leave the message body blank.  This will subscribe you, using the “from” tag of your message to determine your email address.
